Relieving Pain With Medical Marijuana

How does marijuana relieve pain? What types of pain does marijuana help with? Continue reading to see how medical marijuana can stop headaches, injuries, and chronic pain from holding up your life.

To state the obvious: pain sucks. And there are many different types of pain, each with their own range of intensity. Pain can be felt in different body parts and at different levels – visceral (internal organs), somatic (skin + deep tissue), and neurogenic (nerves). The endocannabinoid system extends throughout our bodies, touching each of these levels. This is the same system that cannabinoids – chemical components of marijuana – interact with. Cannabinoids can travel throughout our body and engage in chemical reactions that relieve pain.

Cannabis Can Relieve Headaches

There are 150 different types of headaches. The most common include:

  • Tension headaches – mild to moderate pain that fades within a few hours.
  • Migraines – intense pain, light and noise sensitivity, nausea, often felt on one side of the face, can last from 4 hours to 3 days.
  • Cluster headaches – a powerful and severe headache characterized by piercing pain around one eye, an inability to remain still due to pain, and the appearance of these headaches in groups (or “clusters”) on the same day.

If you suffer from tension headaches, migraines, or cluster headaches, marijuana can be a source of relief. The endocannabinoid system is often referred to as a “circuit breaker” for the brain – it can quiet down overactive systems. This extends to neurotransmitters, which can get imbalanced and trigger migraines. The anti inflammatory properties of marijuana are also effective against migraines. In a study conducted by the University of Colorado, the test subjects who smoked marijuana saw a decrease in the amount of migraines they had in a month – from 10.4 all the way down to 4.6! While you’ll have to figure out what your body prefers, if you’re looking to treat headaches with marijuana start out by  smoking or vaping 0.1 milligrams of sativa for each pound of body weight. For an edible, oil, or capsule, try 30 to 35 milligrams per pound.

The Benefits Of Marijuana After An Injury

Have you recently been injured? Whether it was a sports accident, car accident, workplace injury, or general injury, medical marijuana can provide pain relief without the risks associated with opioids. Time and again studies have shown that people are interested in safer alternatives for pain relief and pain management. Cannabis may be one of the safest, most effective treatment options in the world. And there’s no lethal dosage.

More than 72,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2017, with over half of that total being the result of opioid abuse. In 2015, there were 444 prescription opioid overdoses and thousands of new addicts right here in Oklahoma. That same year, Oklahoma doctors wrote 3.97 million opioid prescriptions (101.7 for every 100 people). This is a higher rate than the national average, which is 70 opioid prescriptions for every 100 people. Our heart goes out to all affected by the opioid crisis. It’s one of the main reasons we decided to open up our medical marijuana dispensary right here in Oklahoma City.

The same mechanisms that allow marijuana to fight off headaches allow it to combat pain from injuries too. Additionally, strains high in THC have an analgesic effect, i.e. it is capable of actually soothing and eliminating pain as effectively as over the counter and prescription pain relievers. Consuming medical marijuana after an injury will allow you to feel better immediately and get back to living your life much faster.

Can Medical Marijuana Help With Chronic Pain?

Yes! Desk jobs, a sedentary lifestyle, advanced age, and more can all lead to chronic pain in your shoulders, neck, knees, back, or all over. Back pain is the most common, in fact 80% of Americans experience back pain at least once in their lives. All forms of chronic pain can prevent you from attending work, enjoying time with loved ones, and even performing household and personal care tasks. Fortunately, medical marijuana can relieve your chronic pain just as it can relieve forms of temporary pain like headaches and injuries. The endocannabinoid system touches all of your body’s systems – organ groups, muscle groups, tissue, nerves, etc. No matter where you’re feeling pain, when you consume marijuana, its components will be able to travel to exactly where you’re hurting and have a positive effect.

Marijuana can treat real chronic pain, but it also can treat psychosomatic (imagined) pain. Sometimes our minds perceive pain when there isn’t a biological source sending pain signals. Even though nothing is wrong, it is still a source of discomfort and stress. A study conducted by researchers at the University of California Davis found that vaporized cannabis significantly reduced this type of pain. Cannabinoids are able to interact with receptors in the nervous system in a way that is difficult (and sometimes impossible) for man made drugs to accomplish. So if your chronic pain is lingering from a past injury, or a symptom of a different issue, you can still benefit from medical marijuana use.
